Section IV Class C

Groton 4- Spencer-Van Etten 1

Hosting their first home sectional game in ten years, the number six ranked Indians made the best of it. Playing good team defense behind a Heather Radcliffe five hit, six strike-out performance, Groton took the victory of the 11th seeded Panthers.

Section V Class CC

Pavilion 12- South Seneca 3

The Falcons run through the sectionals ended at number three Pavilion on Thursday. Molly Collins had an RBI single for South Seneca who ended their season 11-11.

Track and Field

Section IV Class B

The Dryden boys saw their five-year reign of sectional championships broken as the y ended up placing fourth out of 14 teams. Tim Sheftic won the long jump and ran on the second place 400-meter relay team. Tyler Beck came in second in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600. Randy Seltzer cam in third in the high jump, while Andy Horton and Patrick Streeter each added a fifth and sixth place finish.

The girls finished sixth overall with Tara Brenner as the only winner in the pole vault. Samantha Engel came in second in the triple jump and Laura Streeter came in third in the discus.

Section IV Baseball

Class B

Trumansburg 15- Watkins Glen 2

Number six seed Trumansburg broke open a 1-0 deficit in a big way exploding for five in the fourth and eight in the fifth. Kyle Sielaff was 3-for-5 with the go ahead RBI and Skylar Fairchild was 3-for-3.

The Blue Raiders will face number three Windsor in Windsor on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Dryden 9- Whitney Point 2

Pat Perkins went six allowing no runs, three hits, and striking out nine. Corey Goodenough scored the first run and knocked in the last run, all before Whitney Point scored a single run. Goodenough ended up 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

“Cory had a great day at the plate today,” said Dryden coach Kim Brown. “He’s definitely the catalyst for our offense out of the lead-off spot.”

Colby Gee was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Devin Cross added two RBI.

Dryden will face number two ranked Lansing this Saturday in Lansing at 1 p.m. Dryden is 0-2 against Lansing but is riding a nine game win streak and my be the most dangerous team in the playoffs right now. Lansing, however, could be the best team in the tournament right now.

Class C

Marathon 6- Spencer-Van Etten 3

David Mayer started the number 14 seeded Panther off on the right foot, knocking in an RBI in the first for a one nothing lead. However, Marathon would break open the game with two runs in each the fourth, fifth and sixth. The Panthers end the season 5-15.

Delhi 11- Groton 10

Pete Jackson had a two runner on base, two outs and a chance to tie or win the win in the bottom of the seventh when he hit a scorcher down the third base side. Unfortunately, the Delhi third baseman was able to snag the liner for the games final out. The Indians had used a five run third to catch up which included RBI from Jackson (on a triple), Kyle Yunger and Cody Sreet. Groton finishes 11-10 on the season.

Moravia 11- Newfield 5

Number nine Newfield fell to number eight seeded Moravia finishing 10-9 on the season. Nick Hayes was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kyle Newhart added two hits for Newfield.

Candor 11- Elmira Notre Dame 7

The 15 seed made the number two seed Candor work on Thursday, as the Indians had to rally for five in the sixth capped by Mick Thomas’ two run single. Thomas was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Jorden Updyke added two hits and three runs scored for Candor.
