Candor 7- Spencer-Van Etten 5 (8 innings)
In a match between fierce rivals it was the Indians that came out on top on the strength of Jake Tubbs‘ two-run, game winning home run in the bottom of the eighth. Jordan Updyke hit a three run shot in the bottom of the sixth after Candor struggled to score runs in the early going.
“We hit a lot of hard balls right at them,” said Candor coach Steve Frye. “We couldn’t get a break. We were like, ‘Man, do they ever miss anything.”
The rivalry between the two teams is red hot and the fires will only grow as Candor visits Spencer at Nichols Park on Friday. For more on the games and the playoff pictures for both teams, pick up next week’s Random Harvest or Candor Chronicle.
Dryden 14- Elmira Notre Dame 6
Andrew Sterling picked up the complete game win, helping himself out with a double, a home run and two RBI. The Purple Lions, who were behind 6-2 entering the bottom of the third, were buoyed by performances from Pat Perkins (3-for-3, two RBI, one run), Matt Colbert (3-for-4, three runs) and Colby Gee (3-for-5, two runs).
Monday Results
Groton 7-9 – Union Springs 3-0
Groton swept an afternoon double header against Union Springs on Monday. In Game 1, Peter Jackson hit a two-run homer in the first inning to tie the game and Kyle Yunger finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and another driven in.
In Game 2, Josh Senter struck out nine and walked three while Yunger continued his success at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs to lead Groton.
Girls’ Track and Field
Watkins Glen 110- Candor 31
Watkins Glen won 15 of 17 events on the day solidly clinching the victory.
Katie Ahart in the 800-meter and Beth White in the shot put were the winners for Candor, who travel to Watkins for the Twisted Relays on Friday.
Newfield 72 1/2- Moravia 57 1/2
Newfield 93- Southern Cayuga 32
Micki Volpini and Rachel Lance each won two individual events to help Newfield come away with the sweep of the dual meet on Tuesday.
Volpini won the 100 hurdles and high jump, and Lance won the 1,500 and 800.
Newfield will also be participating in Friday’s Twisted Relays.
Lansing 76-Elmira Notre Dame 64
Lansing pulled out a close victory over Division I foe Notre Dame on the strength of Ryann Cretney’s three wins (1500, 800, 300) and Chloe Ryan’s 100 dash.
Lansing heads to the Ithaca Relays on Friday.
Trumansburg 72- Dryden 68
In a close match that came down to the last relay, Trumansburg edged Dryden on Tuesday. Chelsea Gallup led the Blue Raiders, winning the 200, anchoring the 400 relay and leading off the meet winning 1600 relay. Stephanie Hagin was a multiple winner for T-burg taking the shot put and discus.
“It came down to the last relay,” said Dryden coach Lee Stuttle. “We ran our best time of the year by 11 seconds but came up short to a great Trumansburg team.”
The Purple Lion 1600 relay wasn’t the only personal best on the day, Tara Brenner finally topped 11′0″ setting a field and IAC record, and narrowly missed adding to it by clearing 11′6″. Brenna O’Brian, who won the 800, turning in three personal bests and Kaitlyn DeGaetano, who won the 100 with a personal best turned in four personal best on the day.
Boys Track and Field
Dryden 80- Trumansburg 61
Dryden was able to salvage the split between the boys and girls overcoming Trumansburgs depth by winning 13 of the 17 events. Drake Kotowski won the 100 and 200, Tyler Beck won the 1600 and 3200, Patrick Streeter swept the hurdles and Tim Sheftic added long jump and 400 meter victories.
Danny Sullivan led Trumansburg with two victories, one in the discus and one in the high jump.
Spencer-Van Etten 107- Tioga 33
Kurtis Ahart was a quadruple winner for the Panthers with first place finishes in the 110 hurdles, 100-meter dash and triple jump. Ahart was also the first leg on the winning 400-meter relay team.
Chris Winch and Kyle Conrad were also triple winners for the Panthers.
Lansing 122- Elmira Notre Dame 14
Ken Tillapaugh was a triple winner for the Bobcats, who placed first in 16 of 17 events. Tillapaugh was victorious in the 100 dash, long jump and triple jump.
Josh Barber, Henry Potter and Jeff Swayze each added victories in two individual events for Lansing.
Newfield 112 1/2- Moravia 13 1/2
Newfield 80- Southern Cayuga 47
Corey Coon led Newfield, winning the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and tying for first in the high jump against both Moravia and Southern Cayuga
Watkins Glen 93- Candor 48
Oli Riemer won the 400 and long jump for Candor in the loss, which will compete at the Twisted Relays on Friday.
Softball
Candor 12- Spencer-Van Etten 4
Kristen Cleveland was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two stolen bases and Kate Wilcox was 3-for-4 adding an RBI for the Indians.
Ashley Green, struck out 10 on the day and helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Elmira Notre Dame 14- Dryden 3
Amy Strom collected two of the Purple Lions’ seven hits on the day.
