Spotlight- Trumansburg Tennis

April 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Blue Raiders Tennis team is undefeated so far this season and about to take on Elmira Notre Dame, the only other undefeated team in the conference and accepted by the coaches and players in the area as the team to beat this season

I recently caught up with coach Rich Evans and asked him to give me the team’s vital statistics and his outlook on the team’s play so far and their upcoming match up with END.

“Our team record is 6-0.Jay Bartishevich

Here are the individual records of our players:

#1 singles: Jay Bartishevich 6-0

#2 singles: Eric Irish 3-3

#3 singles: Charlie Woodward 6-0

#4 singles: Noah Seifert 5-1

#1 doubles: Kyle VanDelden/Seth Lutter 4-2

#2 and #3 doubles teams have varied including the following five players: Jake Seifert, Ann Messenger, Sabrina Murphy, Johanna Zussman-Dobbins, Lee Sutcliffe

#2 doubles: 3-3

#3 doubles: 1-4

Key wins: Lansing, Waverly, Newark Valley, Thomas Edison

My perspective: We have played several quality teams and the players have all contributed to pull off some very close wins. Our singles players have done very well so far. Jay Bartishevich and Charlie Woodward are both undefeated with 6-0 records and Noah Seifert (5-1) has only one loss to a very well rounded and consistent Newark Valley player. Our first doubles team has shown great improvement, winning their last four matches after losing their first two.

We look forward to playing against the only other undefeated team in our league. Our team understands and respects the talent level of the Notre Dame players. We need to be prepared to play at our highest level when we take the courts Monday.”

Baseball

Dryden 6- Newark Valley 0

Dryden improved to 4-4 on the season, 2-2 in IAC play and 2-1 in Division I. Andrew Sterling picked up the win, his second of the year as he pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only 2 hits, a single in the first and a single in the seventh, while striking out 10. Sterling got out of a 2 out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first as he struck out Devin Beach to end the valley threat. Sterling wouldonly face 2 over the minimum the rest of the way. “Andrew did a nice job of locating after the first inning,” said coach Kim Brown. “His change-up was the best its been all year. He was able to keep the middle of their order off-balance all night.”

Colby Gee was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Pat Finnerty also added an RBI as the Purple Lions scored most of their runs by capitalizing on Newark Valley throwing errors.

Red Jacket 12- South Seneca 10

After being staked to a 10-8 lead on a two-run single by Doug Smith in the bottom of the sixth, Ray Zajac was hit hard in the top of the seventh, and a costly error by Chris Corning allowed the go-ahead runs.

David Barnick hit a triple with only one out in the bottom of the seventh but Ricky Johdrew struck out and Elrick McCheyne popped up to end the game.

For the full game story and photos pick up this week’s Ovid Gazette.

Softball

South Seneca’s game with Red Jacket was suspended after a scary collision between the Red Jacket catcher and third baseman. The catcher, who may have suffered a serious neck injury, was taken off the field in an ambulance. Play will continue on Tuesday at Red Jacket with South Seneca up to bat, with a runner on second and down 4-3 in the 5th.

Elmira Notre Dame 7- Trumansburg 0

Kaitlyn Percy struck out ten in the loss as Notre Dame took advantage of Blue Raider errors to jump out to a quick lead and build steadily on it. Trumansburg plays today at 11 a.m. at home against Dryden as a make up for the April 11 game.

Spencer-Van Etten Softball Tops Odessa-Montour

April 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ever vigilant Tricia Brock struck like the lightning that would soon be over Spencer-Van Etten High School scoring the final run on a passed ball in a 10-9 shootout over Odessa-Montour.

The Panthers took advantage of wild Odessa-Montour pitching to overcome a tough first inning, the loss of their regular first baseman and some defensive miscues.

Facing a one run deficit in the bottom of the seventh Cassie Lesh led off the inning with a walk. BrocTricia Brock fire it in.k came up next and smacked a shot that careened off the Odessa second baseman’s leg and into short centerfield. Hustling into second base Brock forced a quick throw to second that sailed back into the outfield, scoring Lesh from third and allowing Brock to take third base herself. With no outs Kayleigh Lehman came up to untie the game, but she didn’t get the chance. The first pitch got away from the catcher and Brock scored the winning run.

“Odessa-Montour did everything right,” said coach Brian Grube. “They made our defense work and took advantage of mistakes. We’re fortunate to come out of here with a win.”

The Panthers take on Tioga on Friday. It’s a game that Grube admits will be a tough one.

“They are one of the top teams in Division II,” Grube said. “They’ve been in post season play the last couple of years and their pitcher is good.”

Wednesday Around the Lake

April 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

For the first time in weeks it seems, weather played a major factor in games on Wednesday, with intermittent rains and dark clouds with ominous thunder and lightning.

Baseball

Dryden 15- Waverly 1

Matt Colbert improved his record to 2-1, pitching a complete game and striking out 11 while allowing one run on only one hit. Colbert also knocked a few on the day, starting the scoring for the Purple Lions with a two RBI double scoring Colby Gee and Andrew Sterling in the first inning. Gee ended up 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.

Wayne Dougherty had a great day for Dryden hitting two homeruns and accounting for six of the Purple Lions RBI.

“It was nice to see Wayne break-out today,” coach Kim Brown said. “He has been in a little slump and hopefully this gets him going.”

Moravia 11, Newfield 6

Newfield’s strongest opponent, rough team defense, showed up again on Wednesday. Mike Armstrong struck out seven over the first three innings, but were completely negated as Newfield committed seven errors over those same three innings. Armstrong added two doubles and Zak Stamp was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Newfield.

Newark Valley 7- Trumansburg 6 (6 inn.)

Newark Valley jumped out to an early lead and then hung on to beat the Blue Raiders (3-5) in a game called after six innings due to lightning.

“We dug ourselves a hole in the second inning by giving up four runs while committing two errors,” said coach Scott Voorhees. “Our bats finally woke up in the fifth scoring two runs and the sixth scoring four runs.”

But It wasn’t just Newark the Blue Raiders were facing it was mother nature itself. Lightning stopped the game before Trumansburg could get it’s last ups.

Skylar Fairchild went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Trumansburg, which travels to Elmira Notre Dame on Friday.

Lansing 5- Elmira Notre Dame 2 (5 1/2 innings)

Lightning was also a factor in Lansing shutting down the Bobcat’s game early, fortunately for Lansing they were on the winning side. T.J. French struck out eight batters while walking just one batter to earn the victory , while Vince Redmond drove in a pair of runs for the Bobcats who improved to 11-1 overall, 6-0 IAC, and 3-0 Division I.

Lansing did it all without the heavy sticks they’d been brandishing all season. The Bobcats had just three hits, but drew 10 walks and four hit-by-pitches, including a plunking of Teagan Barresi that drove in a run. The Bobcats continue IAC play Friday at Waverly.

Spencer-Van Etten 24-Odessa-Montour 1

The Panthers jumped all over Odessa-Montour before the weather turned bad at Nichols Park. David Mayer went 4-for-5 with three doubles and Charlie Wright drove in three runs on his four hits for the Panthers who evened thier win/loss record at 4-4 on the season. Colin Emery struck out nine in five innings of one-hit ball for Spencer-Van Etten, which travels to Tioga on Friday.

Softball

Trumansburg 7- Newark Valley 6

T-burg improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Divison I after holding off a late Newark Vallery rally. The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Deirdre O’Hara forced in a run when she was hit by a pitch,
Torrie VanDerzee made it safely home on a passed ball, and Kayla Hardesty knocked in two runs with a single.

Newark scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh, but Kaitlyn Percey, who struck out six and only allowed three earned runs, would close out the complete game and the victory with a popup to right field.

Waverly 18, Dryden 5

Kim Hathaway struck out four in the loss while staying in to pitch the complete game loss. The Purple Lions, who had been struggling to get hits in the last few games, finally found some rhythm in the loss though. Christine Kirkpatrick had 3 hits, while Nikki Button, Amy Strom & Kristin Gray each had 2 hits for Dryden.

Watkins Glen 5- Candor 1 (5 inn.)

In another game shortened by impending weather, Candor scattered seven hits over five but only managed to score one before lightning ended the game.

Moravia 11- Newfield 3

Emily Cipriano and Morgan Edwards each had three hits for Newfield in the loss.

Elmira Notre Dame 11- Lansing 3

Brittany French hit a home run for the Lady Bobcats, but it just wasn’t enough against a persistent Notre Dame offense.

Golf

Watkins Glen 222 -Spencer-Van Etten 274

Adam Park led the winless Panthers in a loss against Watkins Glen in an IAC Division II match up. Watkins improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Division II.

Trumansburg 212, Marathon 221

Max Kohler medaled for the Blue Raiders and Brian Butterfield had a double-eagle on the par-five first hole in the Trumansburg victory.

Girl’s Track

Dryden 81- Lansing 59

“Depth hurt us in this season opening meet,” said Ames. “On the girl’s side, we could not match the strength of NewarkValley’s distance program and Dryden’s middle distance program.”

Karthryn Hornibrook won the 100 and 400 hurdles for Lansing and Carol Melice won the pole vault over friend rival and indoor state qualifier Tara Brenner of Dryden.

Dryden got victories from Laura Streeter and Clara Gallagher in the throwing events, and Sam Engel acheived personal bests in victories in the long and triple jumps.
